In this chapter, I will focus on the following question?what factors contribute to a site being among the first in Search engine rankings. Also the knowledge is essential for a web designer to design the site optimally.
A badly designed web site is very difficult to optimize and so a good web site designer must know the basics of SEO.
There are many factors which contribute to the popularity of a site. These can be broadly divided into three.

1. Design of the site
2. Content Of the site
3.Links and other factors external to the site.

Again there are many factors in each of these categories, but we will look into the most important ones as a beginner.
Design of the site:
1. The name of your site/domain/sub domain
2. The age of the domain
3. Structure of the site
Contents
1. The Title of the page
2. Keyword density
3. Meta tags
3. originality of the content
Links and external factors:
1.What sites your site is linked to
2.What sites link to your site
3.Authority of your site.

REmember that every page of your site is crawled by the search engine robots and the search engines use an algorithm (which is not public) to determine the ranking of your site.

Now let us examine these factors one by one in the next article.
